1998

Half-Life releases, development on HL2 begins the next year.

1999

The official start of work on HL2, including the source engine.

2000

the Combine are introduced to the plot

some of the oldest maps, like c1a3a_port, Get your free TVs!, and demo_arctic are made.

2001

GabeN goes to start work on Steam, giving the HL2 dev team the freedom to do whatever.

PHYSICS!!!!

(physics are implemented)

2002

a basic trailer is made, which is shown to gaben, who has not checked up on the project since Early 2001. He says the project is missing things, which the team fix.

Steam is announced at GDC 2002

The team, after getting told trailer-no-good, start making a new one for E3 2003.

The first storyline maps in the WC Mappack are made.

The wastelands and the Combine Factory sections of C17 are scrapped before the end of 2002.

2003

in May 2003, HL2 is shown at E3. Its release date is set for Sept. 30th, 2003. This, of course, doesn't happen.

LEAK!!!!

a German hacker gets into Gaben's account, because Gaben had an easy password to crack.

he leaked the Source Engine source code and the HL2 build from Oct. 2003.

2004

after Various changes, the game is released on Nov. 16, 2004.
